In
Gayb, Vishnu Prasad is a loser. Lacking self-confidence
and the attitude to lead an interesting life, things
always go wrong with him. Gayab shows his unmatched
knack of attracting problems, Vishnu's life doesn't
get any easier courtesy a nagging mother who takes pride
in beating him up at the slightest opportunity! His
father (in Gayab), who is a henpecked husband, is too
petrified to speak, let alone take his side. His friends
show their concern by designating him as the undisputed
king of idiots. Mohini, the love of his life, doesn't
even know of his existence and her boyfriend wants to
break his bones.
As
if all this was not enough... God then proceeds to make
him invisible! ...to make him 'Gayab'. What happens
next? You have to UNSEE to UNBELIEVE
GAYAB
has its moments of glory. And these moments come in
the initial reels itself. Depicting the protagonist
as a loser at the very start of the film was the proper
way to set in motion the story. The turning point in
the tale, when Vishnu becomes invisible, though not
having a strong impact, still keeps the viewer's interest
alive.
After
the initial fun and games, childish though they are,
the film becomes repetitive and drags. The second half
is most unbearable and how one wishes the writers had
thought of expanding the story line.
Prawaal
Raman making his second film after Darna Mana Hai shows
an inclination to make films that are offbeat and that
must be applauded. Tusshar Kapoor is goofy most of the
time and suits the role to a T. He is the only one who
stays within the confines of his role. Everyone else
goes over the top. Antra Mali does her Urmila number
all over again. Not only does she not have one original
expression even her copy cat act is suspect.
The
woman who plays Tusshar's mother Shanti in the film
is very good... What's her name? She does a great job
inducing laughter at times when you suddenly feel that
the scene is too clichéd. Govind Namdeo as the
policeman doe s great job... in the comic scenes again.
Cinematography
[Pietro Zuercher] is consistent. Special effects [Huzefa
Lokhandwala] are decent at times, but tacky at most
places. Even otherwise, great special effects do not
a great movie make.
Director
Prawaal Raman has yet to grasp the art of writing the
screenplay and giving it an interesting form, thereby
mesmerizing the viewer for the next two hours.
On
the whole, GAYAB is quite entertaining.
